Question about mail app. How come the amount of inbox mail is not displayed?

If I have unread mail in my inbox it never shows up on my mail icon. Let's say my iPod is off and then I turn it on, should I expect to see the amount of unread mail on my icon? When does that number actually show up? Is it only when the iPod is on?
