Question about Mail app

When a mail/conversation is deleted from Mail, the one below gets focus and is opened (marked read). Is it possible to prevent this?

When using Gmail, when a message is deleted we are sent back to the list but aren't taken to the next one like in Mail app. Is it possible to make Mail app behave like this?
