If I make a Lion disc using this guide do I then boot into the disc and do the upgrade or should I double click on the InstallESD.dmg and do the upgrade?

yeah once you've burnt the disc in Disk Utility restart your mac while holding option then select the disc you've just burnt and it should start the install process. it may take a long time to actually get started, it felt like an Ice Age had passed waiting to get past the Apple logo when i did a clean install of Lion yesterday

Will it do an upgrade or clean install? I want to do an upgrade.

I inserted the Lion DVD into our other Macs, disc appeared on the desktop, clicked the install pkg. Installed. Simple.
