Question about mic working when laptop closed and laptop docked

On my mid 2018 MacBook Pro, when it is docked, and the lid is closed, the mic does not work. Siri will not respond and I am not able to use audio for FaceTime as examples. Apple said this was the normal behavior. Do current MacBook airs have the same issue?
