Question about providers

I will be getting an iphone in August, but will be spending 4 months in Germany from September-January. Does anyone know if any of the carriers will unlock the phone for for use with a different sim card overseas? I will still be paying the phone bill to Verizon or ATT or whoever so i'm not sure why they should care if I'm also using it with another carrier. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? It's important that if I get a new iphone I have the ability to use it when and where I need it.

Verizon will and sprint will do it after your active for 3 months AT&T will do it after your contract expires so you'll need to go CDMA in order to be unlocked whilst under contract
