I was looking at picking up an iPad 2 as the prices have dropped then I looked into buying an even cheaper refurb directly from Apple since the 1st gen models are nicely cleaned up.

According to Apple's website, refurbed iPad 1's come with a brand new shell and battery. This is in the blurb on the website so you're getting in my book that's pretty much as good as new machine.

However, I cant see any such statement regarding refurbed iPad 2 on their site. There is no mention of a new shell or battery. Is that because the case is un-removable even for apple or do you get some new parts in that model too?

It says "All refurbished iPad models include:..." and includes new battery and outer shell.

What more specificity do you want? Are you unsure if "all ... models" includes the iPad 2s? If so, call Apple and ask.

Since refurbs come with the same return policy and same warranty, what do you have to lose in ordering one?
