I'm not sure I really understand Res Independance in Leopard.

If I get a 26" HDTV that has DVI inputs and a PC resolution of 1366 x 768, would Res Independance let me make everything smaller, to give me something bigger or similar to the res on my 20" ACD (1680 x 1050)?

Sort of. The current stuff in Tiger that can be turned on with the developer tools allows you to set a scaling factor that makes everything smaller. The problem with this is that it becomes more difficult to read stuff. The physical number of pixels does not changes. So at a 0.5x scale factor you get 4 "virtual" pixels being rendered in a single real pixel which can only be a single colour.
