If I decide to go ahead and buy one of the new 15" PBs and it does have the line issue, and let's say two months later Apple acknowledges there is a problem and fixes it, will I be able to exchange my model for the "fixed" version?
 
There's a strong indication that this horizontal line issue in the 15" PB is a firmware problem and it might get taken care of with the 10.4.4 update.

If you're buying directly at the AppleStore introduce yourself to the store
manager and let him know about your concerns and try to get a commitment
that if there's anything wrong , that you'll be able to exchange it without
a restocking fee.

If you go there during a slow period, the other option is to have them bench test your PB before you leave the store.
