Question about 'sounds'

New iphone user here and have a question about sounds.
I have a sound set for email. Settings/mail, new mail.....but when I get an email all it does is a quick short vibrate.
I have checked and rechecked and there is a sound selected, it just doesn't play.
Also is there any way to increase the vibrate? Its just a little tiny shake.

Might be a stupid/obvious suggestion - but have you checked to make sure the phone is not on 'vibrate only' mode/silent?
