question about switching from current iphone to iphone 3g

hi i currently have a iphone and im planning to buy the new iphone 3g, i heard that u can only activate the new iphone trough the store but i have a question , when i go the day it comes out and buy the new iphone, i have to bring my old iphone so they can put the sim on the new one? and i currently have a gophone plan with my iphone cause i dont have a ssn so would i be able to still get the new iphone or even thought i alredy have go phone with at&t they gonna ask me for social security and all that
