Question about syncing contacts and calendar

We set up the e-mail account (BellSouth) on the iPhone 4 with no problems and it's receiving mail correctly. The problem now is syncing contacts. The computer being used for the iPhone 4 has Windows Live Mail for its mail client which is not compatible for syncing with the iPhone. Is purchasing a copy of Outlook the only solution that will allow me to sync contacts and the calendar without changing the BellSouth e-mail address that's being used? If that's the only solution, where can I look to get a copy of Outlook at a reasonable price?
