Question about the iphone 2.0

My sister told me she got me an iphone first gen and she either got it in the UK or in Hong Kong, I'm not sure yet because I haven't gotten the chance to talk to her recently yet. So i'm wondering would the phone work in the U.S. and will it require for me to change my plan(att) to the iphone plan in order to use it or will I be able to keep my old plan that I'm using now.

get us more info... its difficult for us to help you unless we know what kind of iphone, if its unlocked, etc etc

The phone was activated outside the US and I have to call her to ask if it's been unlocked.
