Question about the iPhone 5 activation process.

Hey there, considering that I got my iPhone from the Apple Store, locked to the AT&T carrier, will I be able to activate it using a sim from the aforementioned carrier, even though the sim is not "live", as in, I just got it from the store, but have not yet called the reps to transfer my phone number to it? Thanks in advance.
