question about the requirement to upgrade to each beta if you want OTA

As I understand it, with one of the more recent betas (4? 5?) Apple made it so that you could only upgrade to the latest beta if you were already running the most up-to-date beta build before that, so that developers would be encouraged to always be on the latest build.

Were people also able to go from beta 4 to beta 6 OTA, or beta 3 to beta 5 OTA, or was it only the most recent beta that would allow you to upgrade to the latest one?

And can anyone tell me with which beta version this requirement was first implemented?
