Question about Time Machine and my external Hard Drive

Does time machine overwrite previous files? I noticed that it will back up files a lot, i was just wondering so my external hard drive doesn't get full so quick. it is a 300 GB hard drive, but i don't want it filling up with the same stuff daily when i could be putting other files on it.

It won't make multiple copies of the same file if the file is unchanged.
