Question about Time Machine

Sup everyone,

This is a bit of a newb question but here it goes...

i got a external hdd and when i plug it in to my macbook pro it asks me if i want to use it as a backup disc,

my question is if i do select use as backup disc does this mean i can still use the hdd as storage?
