I have a yamaha receiver with an optical input that I use connected on the other end is the toslink to my mac pro via headphone jack and it seems that no sound is coming out. Anyone know why??

The cord is too short to reach the back for me to use it optical to optical so I'd like to use the toslink.. I know the mac pro's headphone works fine because I have some other external speakers plugged in and it works fine and I've tried the same cable with the toslink adaptor taken off for optical to optical to my xbox 360 and it works fine...

From my understanding of the question ...
Go to System Preference/Sound
and choose Digital Out instead of Line Out.

The headphone jack on the front of the tower doesn't have toslink built in.

Thanks for that, yea i've tried it on a macbook and it worked so there is nothing wrong with the mac pro or my receiver or the cord.

I guess I'll have to use the mac pros back optical input and need to buy a longer cable.
