TL;DR - if I have pre-ordered an iPhone for Apple Store pick-up using a special AT&T carrier deal with trade-in bill credits, can I take my old phone home to transfer my data and return it to the Apple Store within 14 days?

I pre-ordered an iPhone 17 Pro Max on Apple.com for in-store Apple Store pickup on launch day. I have used my AT&T Carrier Special Trade-In Deal/Special Offer to trade in my current iPhone and receive $1,100 in AT&T bill credits over 36 months.

I have selected TRADE IN MY OLD PHONE IN-STORE AT THE APPLE STORE. I still want to do that, but I also want to take my old iPhone 13 Pro Max for a couple days to transfer my data to my new phone and make sure everything is transferred properly. I would like to bring my trade-in device, the old iPhone, back to the Apple Store within 14 days of picking up my new iPhone 17 order to complete the trade in.

My Apple Store pick-up window is 7 pm on launch day, an hour before the Apple Store closes. I’d like to take home my old phone and have the time I need to set up and transfer data.

I have received conflicting information from two sources:
1. An Apple.com online representative said YES, I can pick up my in-store iPhone 17 on launch day through my Apple.com order, and I can take my old iPhone home to transfer data. I must return the old iPhone 13 within 14 days.

However,
2. An Apple Store in-store representative said NO, because I am using a special AT&T carrier special trade-in promotion, I CANNOT take my old iPhone home and complete my data transfer at home and bring it back. The Apple Store employee stated I MUST drop off and fully turn in my old iPhone on pick-up day, in order to receive my new iPhone 17. They mentioned this is because I am using special AT&T carrier deal.

Who is correct? Does anyone have experience with taking the old trade-in device home for a couple days to finish things up in the comfort of your own home, even if you’re using a special carrier trade-in deal?

Thank you so much!

None of us probably know, but I would go with the Apple Store rep. iPhone Upgrade Program requires immediate trade in, but normal trade ins don't. This one is probably like iUP requirements.
