question about unlocked iphones

I'm thinking of buying a iphone 3g from ebay unlocked because I don't really need a data plan because I have wifi everywhere. I live in Canada so I'll either go with rogers or fido sim card. But if i at someone point want a data plan, would i still be able to call rogers and get their data + voice plan? Do they care that I got my phone unlocked from somewhere else?
