Question about upgrading to 4S

Sorry if this has been posted before but I could not find anything on it.

I currently have an old Motorola Droid. I am upgrading to a 4S and am preordering it on Friday. When I order it do they make me choose a plan on it? If you go on Verizon and look at your account you can choose to switch to a new device. It just asks for you to put in your new devices identification number. I am just wondering if I can switch everything over at my house or will I have to put a new plan on it and then take both phones in the Verizon and talk to them about it.
