All Devices Question about using the Find My app for locating Airpods

Does the Find My only show the last location Airpods would have been used, connected to the iPhone, or does it show where they were last in proximity of the iPhone while inside the case? I've lost mine and Find My shows the last location as at the office, which is where I would have last used them (at my desk). So if the app does update location while they are even inside the case, I guess I am screwed.

I would think the only way it could work was last location they were at when connected to the phone. I’m sure they use the phone for location. Seems like a not very useful tool as most people are going to know where they last used them.

To much relief, I found my AirPods and they weren’t at the office, which confirms that Find My only tracks last location they were in use. Luckily I decided to check under the couch, a very unlikely place for them to be lol.
