question about using the new jailbreak when i already have spirit

my friend already has spirit installed on his 3gs and he is on 3.1.3.

can he just upgrade via itunes with spirit still installed and then jailbreak with the new web browser one or will he have to unjailbreak spirit first?


if he has to unjailbreak first by restoring how does he save his contacts/pics/videos?

im not to good with itunes so i dont know how to save all those things

If I were in his shoes, I would backup everything, update his 3GS to 4.0.1, then JB with new JB. There's no real point in JBing with the newest JB if you're just going to stay on 3.1.3 and he's already JBen with Spirit.

so i dont need to get rid of spirit?
also how do you back up things in itunes?

If you do an upgrade to 4.0.1 through Itunes then jailbreakme.com. There is no problem, that is exactly what I did and I had spirit installed previously. The upgrade process also maintains all your itunes apps and data but will wipe all the Cydia apps.

If you upgrade your phone to 4.0.1, that IS how you get rid of Spirit. Backing up things in iTunes is easy, that's not a question needing to be answered here, go to the iTunes help manual and a 10 second search will give you the details.
