Question about Verizon contracts for iPad

I recently switched from AT&T and got a new Verizon iPhone 5 on a Share Everything plan. For Christmas, I'm getting a Verizon iPad 4G and I need to find out if I have to have a contract for the iPad in addition to the phone or can I just add the iPad to the account for $10 a month? I think as of right now the data plan will still be sufficient for both of them.

I change iPads frequently and I hope the additional $10 a month is all that is required with no further contract. I don't want to have to wait for 2 years to upgrade the iPad. Thanks for your replies

I recently switched to the same plan and I was told you can just add it for the $10 with no impact either way on the contract.
