Question about video editing

Hey This is my first post so please don't flame :-/

I purchased my macbook a few months ago, and I'm trying to but the 40 minute video I downloaded (avi format) into 4 10 minute clips, using either imovie, or Final cut express which I just bought yesterday.

In imovie, it wont let me click on the video to upload it onto the program, as if it's the wrong format, but I'm pretty sure avi is supported

and I'm just not sure how to use Final cut to make a small clip out of a larger one

AVI is just a "container" for the video; its not a format.

You can use something like Visualhub to convert it for you into something iMovie will understand. Caveat: Visualhub isn't free but it will save you many hours of messing around at the CLI =]
