I just used winclone to back up my windows partition (I run it either with vmware or bootcamp). However my windows partition has about 40 gb of data on it but the cloned file winclone made is only 26gb.

Does winclone back up data too or just the o/s?

Any thoughts why this might be the case?

Is there any way I can 'test' that backup without erasing my current windows partition?

It will only backup the data. Empty space will not be set aside.

I understand that, but when I open winclone it says it is a 50 gb partition, with 9 gb free. So that means 41 gb of data.

But when I back it up, its only a 26 gb file? Anyway to test that file without completely erasing that partition?

Sadly, no. Just keep all your important data as regular files if you are worried.

The size sounds right to me. The empty space has been removed and the files compressed.
