In the event that Apple fails to update the iPod touch 5th generation to respectable specifications (or at all for that matter), I think I would like to purchase a used iPhone 4 from eBay to serve as my new iPod touch (I curently have the 2nd gen touch).

My question is; is it necessary for the iPhone coming from eBay to have bad esn for me to use it without a wireless contract, or can an iPhone with good esn still be used without being activated on a wireless contract? It would blow to get an iPhone with good esn only to find out that it's useless to me unless I activate it through Verizon or whatever.
