Hey guys,
Please bear with me on this one, my question is based around two important factors I am trying to seek the information on to proceed.
Thanks in advance for any and all insight.
I have a late 2011 MacBook pro and as of 2 days ago it seems my system has fallen to the same symptoms affecting many right now with this model and early 2011 models. Detailed in the following thread for any not aware although I am sure many of you are.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?start=6240&tstart=0
Now after said symptoms began to present themselves I attempted various fixes as detailed around the internet. One such involved modifying the command line when booting into the system console using command ~ s.
I was unable to even boot into the desktop so I tried the following described temporary fix to change which video card the mac booted with. Detailed at the following link under the 'Temporary Fix' sub heading.
https://people.cam.cornell.edu/~zc227/extras/early2011mbp_graphics.html
Now I don't have a solid firm grasp of command line programming and I am know trying in the syntax as described in that link gave me a different result as experienced by the author. After this was complete my mac on boot always went to a grey screen. Following this I attempted to reverse what I had done in the same way however I know I have modified files beyond my understanding to restore them as was.
So I now want to restore the system files as before in the hope it will restore this aspect of my system as it was before. Further to that I believe a fresh installation of this aspect of OSX can only be a good thing.
Now I understand using archive install I can accomplish just that but please correct me if I am wrong. The command line modification I attempted was to move the hardware driver files for the radeon video card from being recognised by the system so it booted up using the integrated card exclusively. I know want to restore my system and all files intact. I am correct in assuming reinstalling using archive install will do just that?
Which brings me to the next part of my post. As I understand it using archive install will replace all the system level files to factory default while leaving intact my files and applications. My main use of this MacBook is for logic and production so if I select archive reinstall of OSX after reinstalling will for example Logic still be operational and present as it is now including more importantly all my third party plugins and VST's? So in effect after reinstallation of OSX I can open up Logic and continue working as now?
By the same degree (I can now boot into safe mode and reach my desktop, whereas booting normally presents me with a black grey background and mouse cursor) if I were to upgrade to Mavericks at this point is this the same operation as reinstalling OSX Lion using archive and reinstall as above?
I understand this is a long post but I really appreciate any and all insight and answers to the outcome of this as I envision it.
The risk of losing all my 3rd party plugins and VST's within logic and having to reinstall after reinstalling OSX seems like it could be a factor after the operation is complete.
Thanks guys.
