I'm just curious what the benefits are for doing fresh, which I assume would take longer to get the apps downloaded?

I've always done an encrypted computer backup and I restore my new phone from that backup.

I am curious about the new methods though, like the direct transfer (not iCloud). I'm not sure if the direct wireless transfer carries over the same data as the encrypted backup?

The reason I don't use iCloud backups is because of the iMessage encryption key. It is safer to user encrypted backup so that key doesn't get stored with Apple, only my device.

I’ve always used my encrypted MBP backup to set up a new phone.

Direct transfer or whatever it’s called where you scan the blue circle. Literally transfers over every detail and setting. I wish MacOS did this because their migration assistant still requires you to setup all the system preferences.

I have done both iCloud and encrypted computer backup, I bounce between the two and never has issues. Depending on your internet speed and I would probably go for the computer backup, imo it tends to be a quicker process (would be even faster if we got usb-c lol)

Depends: As I flip flop between Android and iPhone.

Android to/from iPhone: Direct Transfer

Android to Android: Google backup/sync

iPhone to iPhone: iCloud backup/sync

Really, the only reason I do direct transfer between Android and iPhone is to have an up to date text messages. Pretty much everything I need is stored on the cloud using services which work on a wide range of platforms. If there was a good way to sync text messages between platforms like iMessage does between Apple devices. I wouldn't bother.

I know lots of people say to start fresh, but I get a new phone every year and never start fresh. For years it was use a backup but these days I just use that migration assistant where you keep the phone near each other.

My process, back up to iTunes, backup to iCloud.

Restore new iPhone from iCloud backup. If all my stuff is not there I'll go to the iTunes backup. If I have to do that, the new device will be wiped, put in DFU mode and then I will run the restore from the iTunes backup.

I use the old device as a reference to make sure I got everything. Old device is left in the state it was before I upgraded and it usually forks off as I use it for other purposes.

2021 was a special case as I did direct transfer from Android to iOS. When I was on Android, that was also a direct transfer from iOS to Android.

The data on my current iPhone 11PM originally started on an iPhone 3GS. A process of backups, wipes and DFU restores over the years has kept it clean.

My most recent data transfer was getting my daughter's data from a 6s to an SE 2020. The setup process asked if we wanted to connect the two phones and transfer everything directly. So, we did that (I made her sit with me). Seems to have gotten everything because it's been a few months and she hasn't told me anything was missing.

I do the direct transfer.

This year I guess I’ll have to figure out how to activate the eSim and get my phone number on there. Normally I would just put my old SIM in my new phone.

My health data and messages get transferred just fine with the direct transfer. If I remember correctly I know at least health data isn't put into a backup unless it's encrypted.

It should ask you if you want to move the SIM/phone number over. Keyword being should ha.

I also used the iPhone to iPhone content transfer as all data moves to the new iPhone in 17 minutes or so. Just scan the blue swirling circle on one iPhone to transfer the data.

Used to do fresh, but have done encrypted backups the last few times.

I have not noticed a difference in performance and the encrypted backup is much quicker to get back to normal use.

But do I automatically have an eSim in my phone if I’m using a regular SIM?

‘I was told by two different AT&T employees to update to iOS 16 with my 13 Pro Max and when I did the ”data transfer” it would move my service over to my new iphone !$ ProMax.

Direct transfer. Havent started fresh since iCloud backups became a thing but do the newer direct transfer now.

I will update my 13PM on Monday to iOS 16. Back ups every night. Pick up the 14PM and restore from the latest back up. Been doing this for many many years. No issues what so ever on my end.

So for a newbie, is it better to do a direct phone to phone transfer or to back it up to iCloud and then download that to the new phone?
