When you buy an iPhone and sign up for an 18 month contract, what happens at the the end of that 18 months?, are you expected to sign up for another 18 months, could they maybe let you go on payg with their network?

It would be useful if you could tell us what country you're from and what network you'll be using.

Certainly in the UK if you have an 18 month contract with O2 you would be under no obligation to renew - in my experience with them after 18 months you would simply carry on using the phone as per your existing contract but could cancel at any time.

Nope. Like any carrier, once your AT&T contract is up, you are just paying month to month at your will.

Both true, however as per current contracts if you wish to use the phone part after the contract you will have to remain on an official iphone tarriff. ie. the current carriers will not unlock the phone for you.
