Just a quick question out of curiosity. I bought a full price 5s from the Apple Store a few months ago, and of course it was unlocked. But this is what I'm curious about. Is the model I was given unlocked already before it was sold? Or is there something that happens software side with the IMEI/Serial that unlocks it as soon as it's sold? Just a curiosity, haha.

What model iphone did you buy?
Did you get a factory unlocked version, or a full priced verizon iphone?
The unlock portion is usually tied up software wise to the IMEI number and the way you made the purchase. If purchased under contract with a specific carrier then the lock is put in automatically with that specific carrier.
Also certain carriers iphones have different model numbers like the cdma enabled iphones and Tmobile or AT&T iphones are different.
