anyone know if there is a effective way of preserving it at this time to upgrade to 4.2.1?
 
Always, custom firmware (one that keeps your current baseband).
 
You use Tiny Umbrella and the blobs for whatever iOS you want to install. In itunes, press <option>+restore to open the dialog box so you can install the ipsw you want to use.
If pwnage is available, you can also use that.

Incorrect. Only works on IP4 and for 4.2.1, you would use the "Update" option. Custom firmware is still the much better option.

And you are referring to WHICH model of the iphone? I love how people provide half the information we need and then everyone goes off in their own directions in the replies.
 
I knew it worked with iphone4, but thought it applied to all versions of 4.x.x.
