iPad Question for selling iPad on past iOS

If I wanted to sell my ipad 3, which is currently running ios 6, would I have to install ios 8 in order to delete my data and sell it as a "new" ipad?

Or, could I keep ios 6 on it but erase all of my personal data and have it reset as a new ipad on ios 6?

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

This will maintain the iOS 6 install while ridding everything else from the device.
