I still have the original ATV4 HD and one of the main issues I have with it is that the BBC iPlayer is not appropriately implemented.
Specifically I hate that subtitles are not available ad for this reason I end up using other sources for the iPlayer.

I am contemplating upgrading to the 4K 3rd gen model and I am wondering if these issues with the iPlayer have been resolved.
Can anybody please confirm one way or the other?
Thanks

EDIT: I have found the answer on Reddit, as follows: https://www.reddit.com/r/appletv/s/hzBwCitZfA

Sadly still a substandard experience with the iPlayer and Apple TV.
The BBC blame Apple for using a different standard from everyone else, whereas Apple blame the BBC for not conforming with their standards.
I really would like to make the ATV work for me, but sadly in the UK this is not entirely possible.

iPlayer & Apple TV has always been a bit of a below par experience. They don't support UHD or HDR either. I wasn't aware about the lack of subtitles though. That is poor especially when it's one of the major streaming services here.

I have been waiting for the iPlayer app to support subtitles since the AppleTV HD 4th gen. The option to enable subtitles is there but nothing happens when selection subtitles.

I gave up and use a Firestick Max to get UHD and subtitles. It'd be great to have everything on a single streaming device but it's just not meant to be.

BBC looks like they will never implement subtitles on apple tv for iPlayer. They expect Apple to change their implementation of subtitles, it seems the BBC won’t make changes for Appletv!

Apple TV needs to support DASH like pretty much every other device on the market.
For the BBC to make changes would mean changing their entire broadcast output just for the one device on the market that doesn’t work like the rest.(according to the BBC there’s 300+ devices that do and 1 that doesn’t)
There’s no way they could justify that expense to make those sorts of changes for what’s essentially a niche device that in the grand scheme of things isn’t that popular in the UK.

Exactly my point. Neither will bend for the other so the end user gets no subtitles 😢
