Question installing Snow leopard

Looking at installing snow leopard for the first time. Will I lose all programs ie photoshop and other files without backing up. I hate to install everything over again

No, you can upgrade and everything including customized settings for OS X will remain intact. Of course it's always good to have a backup before making any major changes to a computer such as installing a new operating system, so do make sure that you have one as well as all of your installation materials before performing the upgrade in case it doesn't go as planned.

You should have a backup, regardless of instillation.

The Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installation DVD will just upgrade the Mac OS X part and not delete any of your data and applications.
