It's a remnant icon of an application that no longer is residing on your system.
Do you get any tooltip by hovering over it?
If you don't need it, you can drag it off by holding down the CMD key.

Do you get any tooltip hovering over the question mark or what information do you see via right clicking the question mark?
Other than that, I don't know how to see what application has put an icon there.
Have any of the other threads given you any useful information?
