So I'm trying to use a single external drive to share between my new Mac laptop and an XP box. I have a firewire Maxtor but I'm told by Maxtor that both machines can't share the drive -- I've been trying it, but when I connect the Mac the XP box can no longer access the drive. Is that true, or do I need to try to reformat it? Do any of you have recommendations on other brands of hard-drive to purchase for use as a centralized repository for music and photo files to share between machines? NB I have a Buffalo LinkStation, which is essentially a NAS, but it is extremely slow with the Mac.

You can't share a drive between a Mac and a PC at the same time, I don't think. You *may* be able to conect it to the Mac and then find it through the network on the PC, but in my experience this is unreliable - or just doesn't work at all.
