Question on external graphics setups

I was thinking about getting a ViDock, and needed input from people who have done this in the past.

Basically, my macbook is perfect with everything besides graphics. So I plan hook up an external graphics setup via vidock to my macbook.

Does it matter what you connect to the dock? Can you use a PCIE 3.0? Or is it limited to a certain card range?

I'm not sure about the ViDock, but I use an absurdly expensive (but wonderful) Sonnet IIID PCIe 3.0 full-length Thunderbolt 2 enclosure.

After putting a GTX 780 Ti inside it and plugging it into the Thunderbolt port, it's all plug and play.
