i'm coming from android so i was wondering how things work on iphone.

for google maps on android, when using navigation, the app would ask if i would like to turn on gps, kinda like how the iphone has the on/off setting for wifi. my question is when i use navigation on the iphone, do apps know when to use gps? and when i press home, and get out of the maps app on ios, does it automatically turn off gps b/c i dont want to rack up data charges if it's running in the background

and similarly for when i use safari or any app that uses data. if i just hit the home button to get out of the app, does it continue to run in the background and refresh or whatever and use data? or does the app become idle and not use data.

thanks in advance
