Question on Pre-Ordering and Family Plan with ATT

My wife currently has an Iphone and a plan with ATT. I have an EVO with a plan from Sprint. I plan to preorder the Iphone 4s tomorrow and switch my account to ATT and then change to one family plan with ATT.

I'm very unfamiliar with the pre-order process through Apple. Can I accomplish the above by pre-ordering through Apple?
 
Just buy it as a new phone on the existing AT&T account, then when it arrives take it to the AT&T store and have them port the number over.
