I'm an Exchange power-user. I have Outlook 2003 on my work computer and I use all these features to manage my Outlook data:

  • contacts categories
    recurring calendar items
    reminder alarms of various lengths
    color coded calendar items
    meeting requests
    all-day calendar events
    tasks, categorized
extensive notes fields in some calendar items and contacts
multiple email addresses for some contacts

Does the iPhone 2.0 software show all this info, and does it allow you to create/edit it? Can it easily handle 1000s of contacts without getting bogged down?

Or would I be better off with a Blackberry, which I know can do all this?

Right now I use a Motorola Q Windows Smartphone, and it handles all this with out a problem, though I had to add "Agenda One" calendar software to allow me access to some of the data fields like meeting invites.

contacts categories - Not sure....
recurring calendar items - YES
reminder alarms of various lengths - YES
color coded calendar items - NO (though I've seen this in the pictures so it was either MobileMe only or it might come to exchange)
meeting requests - YES
all-day calendar events - YES
tasks, categorized - NO (there is no task sync)
extensive notes fields in some calendar items and contacts - YES (but there might be size limits)
multiple email addresses for some contacts - YES
