I'm looking to buy a 3GS for my wife's birthday, which is still a few weeks away. I'll be updating the existing contract, and ordering through the US online store.

Am I correct in the assumption that, even when I am buying the phone online, the contract will not switch over to the higher pricing model until the phone is actually activated?

I recognize that may seem like a dumb question; I just don't want her current phone to stop working while I wait for her birthday to gift her with the new one.

Thanks in advance,

thats correct
for example i pre-ordered my iphone last week and put all the porting info over(bringing a phone # from verizon) and my verizon line still works. She would be able to use her old phone no problem
