Question RE USB hubs/ broken port on macbook

So the USB ports on my friends 4 year old macgbook are dying. Both ports will recognize my 4+ year old ipod, but not her iphone or mine. She took it to the apple store and and plugged various this in and some worked, but not an iphone.

Is there a usb hub that will plug into maybe the ethernet port, or a wireless one that she could buy to bypass the weak ports?
