Im buying a Powerbook soon and was going to install airport on it. Do I have to buy the Apple Airport Base Station, or can I used any 802.11 g (or b for that matter) receiver?

Most any router will work. I like the AE base station though because it offers wireless USB printing, which is good for me since the only computers in my house are laptops. I have no desktop to use to share a printer with so that was pretty important to me.

i think most powerbooks sold bye apple now come airport ready

but getting to ur question, you dont need to get the airport base station itself, any b or g network will work with the airport extreme cards and any b station will work with the original airport card. that being said, i would go for linksys or netgear base stations if you arent getting an apple

the apple basestation is the simplest to set up and like the previous poster mentioned can do wireless usb printer sharing
