My old Macbook pro 15" was spoiled. It's not the current new model, it's the older model (the one where you have the battery light at the back, not at the left side).

I intend to remove the harddisk, and plug it into my new Macbook pro 13" to read the content (through the USB). I know I need a certain type of cable to plug it in the USB, the question is, is it possible to read the content by just plugging it into the USB slot?

Yes you can read and write if you have a USB to Sata converter for the drive. It is the same way as the small portable drives work.
