what format are the drives in? i'm guessing probably FAT-32

how big are the files? bigger than 4GB?

you can't put files bigger than 4GB on a fat-32 drive, don't have an extreme, so not sure how you format drives, (from looking around on the net you may not be able to)

if you want to put files bigger than 4GB on the drive on an extreme it must be formatted HFS+.

First, thanks for the reply. The files are about 1.2 GB and it is on a FAT32 drive. Apparently it is the only format that works with the extreme. FWIW, last night I backed up 3,800 photos and not a problem. Thanks!
