I have heard from some people one this thread that every message on IM = 1 text?! That cannot be true, because I mean I am paying for the internet, so how and why could they montitor my individual messages?

This is a thought for getting around the extra text plans.

That's how it is on some older phones, because AIM is simply interfacing with the SMS system to send and receive messages. When iPhone gets a standalone chat client, it will be data only, interfacing directly with AIM, and so won't result in a hit to your SMS allotment.

So that means if i download an AIM app from the App store, I won't be charged for text messages, correct?

When I listened in on the AT&T investor telecall yesterday, one investor asked if this would cost at&t money...and they seemed to think that the future was in data, not text messaging.

I know with their push/background amp ability, i'll probably drop my text message plan from 1500 to 200 and tell my friends to just text me that way.
