I've recently picked up a Dell UP2715K 5120×2880 monitor (Revision A01; manufacture date August 2016). It's hooked up to a Late 2015 (Broadwell) 21.5" iMac Retina 4K with Intel Iris Pro 6200 graphics running macOS Mojave 10.14.6. As I'm not getting any picture when using a dual-link (2× DisplayPort 1.2) SST connection [I have the parts for an eGPU setup coming which will hopefully take care of this], I'm using the miniDP port and running the monitor at 3840×2160 for the time being.
Problem: I experience feelings of nausea after a very short time of looking at the monitor (sometimes in less than a minute). No eyestrain or headache, just nausea. I've never had this before. My first idea was PWM but most sources indicate that this monitor doesn't use it or uses it at a very high frequency. For instance, a German review states 20.8 kHz at 50% brightness.
Things I've tested:
- Asking another person to sit in front of the monitor for a few minutes and report if they experience the same. Their answer was negative.
- Running the monitor at various brightness levels (0%, 20%, 50%, 100%). No difference. Right now, brightness is at 20% and contrast at 75%.
- Running a PWM test which, as far as I can see, indicated no PWM at the brightness levels I tested (0%, 20%, 50%, 100%). I'm seeing one smooth line every time.
- As I was originally running at 2560×1440 HiDPI which was output at 3840×2160 and then upscaled by the monitor, which made fonts slightly but noticeably blurry, I set the monitor to display the 3840×2160 signal at actual size (1:1) and selected the pixel-perfect 1920×1080 HiDPI mode. Now, fonts are sharp and the feelings have become slightly better but are still not completely gone.
Having previously used a 23.8" 3840×2160 monitor (Dell P2415Q) at the same viewing distance, it's not impossible that I just need to get used to the larger size (again). But I'd like to ask if anyone who also owns and uses an UP2715K has experienced the same. Also, what are your brightness and contrast settings?
