So I’ve ordered the Apple Watch Ultra 2, coming from a series 7. I was just wondering what has been your experience coming from a regular Apple Watch to an ultra.

I went ultra last year. I don’t want to go back.

The battery life alone is the biggest thing. Battery life on the normal one is so restricted.

I do like the large size more also.

‘I returned two Ultra watches due to their size and went back to my SBTi S7. But I am now the proud owner of the Ultra 2.

there are plenty posts from last year if you dare to search ...
this one is even a sticky: Returning the Ultra? [MERGED]
I got the Ultra last year, for me only positive: battery, easier to read, action button ...
Have had AW since S0, still have S4 SBSS and S7 Ti but only use them for sleep tracking ...

I did the same thing. Series 7 stainless (Hermes) to Ultra 2.

My reasons were larger display (even if only slightly) and larger battery. While I don't really need a multi-day battery, my previous watch could not make it through a whole day if I did a 1 hr workout in the morning, used a watch face that had lots of color or full-screen color, and made good use of the watch throughout the day (like leaving my phone in the office and letting the watch run on wifi if I was in the building at work or cellular if I took a walk outside).

With the Ultra 2, while I've only had it a couple days now, I have no worries about being as inefficient with watch face, complications, workouts, wifi & cellular use, and workout tracking as I want to be. Bring on the solid white or solid blue California watch faces or the new Solar analog (or whatever it's called). Bring on the 3rd party heart rate and pedometer complications (which always used to drain my old watch's battery).

on the same journey as the OP. Initial thoughts after a couple of days

it is heavier than my S7 GPS Alu but very quickly got used to it and don't feel the weight now.

The battery is much longer lasting. I took it off the charger at 8am yesterday. now 36 hours later it's sitting at 60% and I feel I'll get another day out of it!

so far I love it, hope you do too

I upgraded from the Series 5 to the Ultra 2. I thought I would notice the weight difference. However, I don't notice it at all. I have been using it since Friday, and initial impressions are good. I like the battery life and large screen.

Battery life alone is worth it I often go out for walks that can be 3-4 hours and I have a work out running during this, on my Series 7 this would take it from 100% down to around 30% if charged to full just because I leave. The same thing on my Ultra 2 took it from 100% to 80% so massive difference. Based on my typical usage I should easily get 2-3 days out of it including sleep tracking.

Went from Aluminum S7 45 to Ultra 2 after having thought the Ultra looked terrible in all the marketing pictures and not even considering it until I finally saw one on a person IRL this spring. The ugly orange color isn't nearly so bad as it looks in pictures, and the watch doesn't look as massive in-person either.

Weight-wise, I can only tell the difference if I'm holding both my old watch and the new at the same time. On the wrist, the additional weight is completely unnoticeable.

I'm giving the Alpine Loop band a try. It looks fantastic on the watch and on my wrist, however like others have said, it's a bit of a pain to take off and put on. I never understood what in the world they were talking about until I did it myself. That said, I wouldn't shy away from Alpine Loop just for that minor inconvenience. I may swap it out to my stainless steel milanese loop knockoff eventually, but for now I'm content with the Alpine Loop.

This is the first day I'm comfortable making any sort of judgement about the battery life, with all the communication going back and forth for setup and getting things in place after a fresh install and WatchOS update, plus playing around with settings, battery is bound to be lower for the first few days. I've been wearing the watch (no workout yet) for about 8.5 hours today, and it is down 11%. That's quite good compared to the Series 7. I'm continuing to wear the Series 7 overnight for sleep tracking and the Ultra during the day. The first night I had the Ultra, I charged it up to 100% before bed, then took it off the charger. Overnight and sitting unused it lost 4% so I started yesterday with 96%. So it was definitely still doing something in the background. I did the same overnight yesterday into today, and it was still at 100% this morning.

I don't think I'll have a problem sleeping with the Ultra. It's really not that big. But I'll probably continue wearing the Series 7 to bed when at home, only using the Ultra for sleep tracking while traveling. In theory I can keep battery cycles down over time. Which will be good for me, but harder for Apple trying to get more money out of me with new watches.

Overall, the experience with the Ultra so far has been excellent. The display is generally much easier to read, apps and Siri feel very responsive, I haven't had any problems tracking outdoor workouts. Heart rate and GPS information has been captured perfectly reliably.

I'd absolutely recommend this watch to friends (already have!) and family, although I'd never disparage the Series watches, those are great too! But with extra battery (and new-to-me cellular capabilities), the Ultra can't be beat in my opinion.

EDIT:
Around 12 hours now, and battery is at 78%, including a 40 minute outdoor running workout and otherwise normal use for me, no battery saving measures. Down by 22% in 12 hours would mean easily making it 48 hours and still having 12% left - assuming 160 minutes of workouts in that time. Probably more, since that would include two sleep sessions with the screen entirely off and the watch not being in active use. As with any notes of this type, YMMV based on activity and usage. This is looking good so far!

Regular AW is completely pointless anymore. Apple should have “courage” and cancel it like they canceled headphone jack. And make 2 sizes of Ultra, 49mm and 53mm. With 5 days battery life minimum and LED flashlight aka Garmin.

Noooo, they need a size smaller than the 49mm, for people with small wrists like myself! And I doubt Apple will offer 5 day battery life anytime soon. But other than that, I kind of agree with you that the Ultra is the future of Apple watch, and all or much of its features should be offered across all watch models.
