Questions about 3.0.1 updating to 3.1.3

Hi, i am rookie here. I am using a jailbroken 3.0.1 3gs, as my phone runs slow and lag, i am thinking to update to 3.1.3. My questions are:
1) can i use the itunes update to 3.1.3 then use spirit to jailbreak?
2) Do i need to back up the SHSH now ? as is my cydia page, it ask me to click" make my life easier"

Did you already click make my life easier?
It should say on top of the page when you open up cydia what SHSH's you have on file.

By the way, there is no downside to saving your hashes. Just click the button and be done with worrying about it.
