If I buy an iPod and then decide to get AppleCare for it, do I need the reciept for proof of purchase date? Is there any other way?

the purchase date will appear on Apple's support site when you plug in your serial number BUT if there is a discrepancy between when you actually bought and when they say you bought it, you'll need the receipt as proof.

Will it be will automatically entered into their site when you purchase the item, or is it like a registration thing?

If you bought your iPod in a store, when you got home you should have registered your warranty through Apple.com

If not, then there may be a discrepancy between the DOP that Apple has and when you actually bought it, so you will need to provide a receipt.

no registration necessary. just the fact that you bought it puts the information in the system. if it doesn't show up after a few days/a week, give AppleCare a call.
